The New Year is a great time to start anew with an upgraded style. Instead of the “New Year, New Me” resolution, follow these tips and elevate your look this year.
Be inspired by yourself. Instead of stressing about what you should change, play to your strengths. When you build your style around the best of you, you’ll express confidence with ease, making a mighty statement. That way, instead of hearing “nice shoes”, or “lovely dress”, you’ll hear “You look fabulous!”
Now that’s a realistic New Year’s resolution.
Whether you want to make a complete overhaul or just a few tweaks to your style, there are plenty of ways to elevate your personal image this year.
1. Find the clothes that make you happy
The secret to a smooth style is being happy with what you wear. People have a hard time with this because they became attached to clothes even after their preferences or life circumstances changed. Ask yourself when was the last time you felt fantastic in an outfit. Remember what were you wearing: clothes, accessories, shoes; and look through your closet to find items that match those in your fantastic outfit. They will be the basis of your upgraded style. Embrace them.
2. Change your viewpoint
Now that you’ve found your feel-good items, it’s time to explore fresh ideas. Many of my customers came to me for help while being stuck in a style rut, usually because they are afraid of new ideas. Trying new things and taking risks is crucial to upgrade both your style and your life.
Feel free to experiment. Play with your clothes to see what special combinations you can create, by mixing and matching items in new ways, you’ll surely find new favourites to boost your appearance. If you can’t find anything convincing, there are two things you can do depending on what you’ve found in step 1.
If they are classic or basic clothes, think about those pieces that piqued your interest while browsing for clothes or walking past a store. Choose a few that spoke to you and find ways to incorporate them into your existing wardrobe. For example, if the item is an oversized, chunky-knit sweater, pair it with straight-leg jeans or a pencil skirt for a balanced look. If your favourite pieces are unique or quirky, invest in high-quality, classic pieces that you can mix and match to create multiple looks with them. Think about a well-fitting black leather jacket, a classic bag, or a simple little black dress that goes with your body.
3. Let go
At this point, you might have realised there are a lot of items that either you don’t like or don’t feel right anymore. This happens for many reasons like impulse buys, or gifts from people who don’t know your preferences. All those pieces create a barrier between you and your desired style. Let them go. Remove the clutter and use that space to focus on finding clothes that truly help to express yourself and how you want to be perceived.
Upgrading your style doesn’t have to be expensive or time-consuming. By taking stock of what you love, investing in a few quality pieces, experimenting, and letting go of what doesn’t work for you anymore, you can easily elevate your look in the new year. Be confident and try new things to find a style that makes you feel and look fabulous.
